ENGLISH for Life Academy's TESOL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM 100-Hour Class Time 50-Hour Practicum Click for more information Course Overview ENGLISH for Life TESOL Training and Language Academy delivers the training, practical experience, professional resources, and personal mentoring needed for teachers to: feel confident in the ESL classroom  create dynamic teaching plans and classroom materials develop their own teaching style grounded in proven language learning theories and methodologies. find a job teaching English internationally ENGLISH for Life Academy's TESOL Certification curriculum adheres to the highest standards for teachers who wish to teach within the United States and internationally.  Our Certification process includes 100 hours of classroom instruction in TESOL Theory and Methodology, plus a 50-hour supervised teaching practicum.  Although certification will be issued on a pass/fail basis, this is college level course with a text, assignments, and evaluations. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Master Degree credits are available upon successful completion of the program. What makes this TESOL Certification Program unique is its methodology. All themes are taught interactively, creating an intensively collaborative learning environment based on the proven theories of adult education and cooperative learning. In this way, participants not only receive the required subject matter, they actually experience and critically reflect on the designs and techniques being used in successful ESL classrooms. Students finish this course with a thorough experiential and theoretical foundation on how to facilitate a quality ESL class.  You not only will have assimilated the knowledge desired by every employer, you actually will have used it. Course Details   Fall 2008 CHARLESTON, SC Weekend Intensive Course Classes meet for 6 weekends September 5 - October 26 [no classes on the weekend of Sept. 19-21 and the weekend of October 10-12] Friday evening 5:00 - 9:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sunday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Practicum can be completed through December 2008 Spring 2008 GREENVILLE, SC Semester Course February 5 - March 29 Monday and Tuesday classes 5:00 - 9:00 PM Practicum completed through June 2008 Summer 2008 GREENVILLE, SC Intensive Course June 2 - June 26 Monday - Thursday 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Practicum can be completed through December 2008 Fall 2008 GREENVILLE, SC Semester Course September 2 - November 24 Monday and Tuesday 5:00 - 9:00 PM Practicum can be completed through December 2009 In addition to the 100 class hours in each fall and spring semester, a 50-hour practicum is required. Students enrolled in the fall semester may complete this practicum during November and December of that same year.  Students enrolled in the spring semester may complete this practicum during April and May of that same year.  Tuition and Fees   Non-refundable Application Fee $ 100. Students must purchase the text for the course, Teaching By Principles: An Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy, by Douglas Brown, available at the Greenville Tech bookstore and most retail textbook stores.  Be sure to purchase the third edition (2007) of the textbook. It retails for approximately $50 USD.   In addition to the text, teachers may elect to assign additional readings from other sources. Course Requirements To begin the TESOL Certification Program, participants must have: a college degree and/or have demonstrated an ability to do college level work fluency in English a strong interest in learning and teaching a willingness to work cooperatively and reflectively the self-discipline to complete all designated course assignments  Course Descriptions The TESOL Certification Course can be broken down into 4 classes, or "modules."  Together, the modules are completed in 150 hours, or one intensive semester.  Here is a description of the course, broken down into modules, to give you a better idea of just what you will be involved in. Each module contains assignments, a project, teaching and interaction, and lots of opportunities for fun!    TESOL Theory and Methodology This module is designed for teachers to explore TESOL theory and methodology, understand and experience the variety of language learning methodologies, and be able to critically evaluate, adapt, and apply their knowledge to various language learning and teaching situations. Topics include:  Language Learning Experience, Culture and Diversity, The Profession of ESOL, First and Second Language Acquisition, ESOL Methodologies in Context, Communicative Language Teaching, Learner Variables, Student Proficiency Levels and Intake Assessments. The Principles of Language Teaching This module provides an in-depth look at all aspects of teaching language, and encourages teachers to reflect on their own teaching and learning experiences so they can begin to create their own philosophies on teaching.  Teaching techniques and strategies for all language skills will be explored and practiced. Topics include: The Art of Teaching, Teaching Adults/Teaching Children, Teaching Vocabulary, Teaching Listening, Teaching Speaking, Teaching Reading, Teaching Writing and Literacy, Teaching Grammar, Teaching Content, Teaching Pronunciation. Instructional Design in the Student-Centered Classroom This module is designed to help teachers make informed decisions in the classroom based on sound theory and critical reflection.  The focus is on creating an environment in which learning can take place and focusing on the student by using cooperative, communicative, whole-language techniques. Topics include: Lesson Planning, Assessment and Evaluation, Professional, Educational, and Electronic Resource Selection and Development, Integrating Field Trips into the Curriculum, The Cooperative Classroom, Classroom Management and Conflict Resolution, 2 Elective Topics. Teaching Practicum This module is the culmination of the Certification Program, providing teachers with the opportunity to practice and critically reflect on the contents of the previous modules, as well as develop their own teaching skills as they prepare for future jobs and assignments.  The practicum is supervised and assessed by the ENGLISH for Life Practicum Supervisor in conjunction with an assigned classroom teacher. Assignments include: Observing, Journaling, Team-Teaching, Lesson Planning, Material Selection and Development, Teacher Conferencing, Teaching.
