TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES
ENGLISH for Life Academy is searching for exceptional teachers and experts in ESOL --- particularly in the fields of linguistics, intercultural communication, English grammar, and teacher education -- to teach in our 130-hour TESOL Certification Course.
Criteria for Teaching Positions
We continue to build a team of dynamic, creative professional teachers who are interested in working in a collaborative environment. Teachers are needed for the fall, spring, and summer semesters to teach 4 - 16 contact hours (1-4 classes) on various ESOL subjects. Employment is on a contract basis. We make every effort to schedule classes that do not conflict with day teaching positions.

- teaching experience in the United States and/or abroad
- knowledge of current issues and research in the ESOL field
- experience and/or expertise teaching adults in a setting that is interactive, reflective, participatory, challenging, and fun.
Background on the TESOL Certification Program at ENGLISH for Life Academy
After years of listening to what ESOL teachers felt was missing in their training and what they needed to present exceptional ESOL classes, ENGLISH for Life created its TESOL Certification Program --- a college level course offered in a practical, affordable format by a private enterprise. It was created by an ESL teacher for ESL teachers, and is taught by teachers who have real experience teaching adults and kids, at home and abroad. The teachers in this program have been selected because they love teaching and creatively teach what they know best.
In September 2003, ENGLISH for Life Academy began offering 150-hour TESOL Certification Courses for teachers of adults. This was the first time South Carolina had such a program. The course includes 100 hours of ESL Theory and Methodology plus an experiential 50-hour supervised teaching practicum. Upon successful completion of the course, participants earn their TESOL/TEFL certification, opening exciting teaching positions for them in South Carolina and around the world.
In 2005, ENGLISH for LIfe Academy teamed with the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, to offer nine graduate credits for those students completing our TESOL Certification course.
In January 2008, ENGLISH for Life Academy worked with Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, bringing our TESOL Certification program to Wofford students who were planning to work overseas.
In February, 2008, course participants could now earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in addition to their TESOL Certification as we began to offer this program in partnership with the Greenville Technical College.
Currently, ENGLISH for Life Academy's TESOL Certification course is being considered as part of the State of South Carolina's required credentials for adult education teachers.
Beyond this extraordinary program, ENGLISH for Life Academy is unique because of its singular mission: to help people become great ESL teachers through collaborative, participatory, reflective learning. We believe that experiential learning is not only the most effective way to learn ... it's also the most practical and fun.
What are We Really About? Learning!
What makes our TESOL Certification Course unique is its methodology. All themes are taught interactively, creating an intensively collaborative learning environment based on the theories of adult education and cooperative learning. In this way, participants not only acquire the subject matter, they experience it and can critically reflect on the designs and techniques used in successful ESL classrooms. Participants finish the course with a thorough experiential and theoretical foundation on how to facilitate a quality ESL class.
They not only have assimilated the knowledge required, they actually have applied it.
The supervised 30-hour practicum is the culmination of the program, giving participants an opportunity to use what they have learned in a real classroom environment. It includes observation, reflection, student/teacher interviews, assisting, and teaching. This practicum prepares individuals with little or no previous teaching experience ... and fine tunes the skills of those teachers who are actively teaching. This practical teaching experience is invaluable for anyone who wants to teach English at home or abroad.
Who are the Participants in the TESOL Certification Program?
Course Structure
- Current ESL teachers of adults who desire more extensive training than they have been offered in the past.
- People looking for a career change or a supplemental job teaching ESL to adults in the United States --- people who want a thorough, practical training program.
- People interested in teaching abroad who want a program that offers more than the basic TEFL course --- one that includes a 30-hour supervised teaching practicum.
- Administrators who want more in-depth knowledge to help in hiring, evaluating, supporting, and educating their ESL teachers and tutors.
- People who want to create and implement an ESL program in their communities, but are unsure of where or how to begin.
The course is divided into 4 modules:
Each module contains 7 - 9 topics with each topic covered in its own four hour class period. ENGLISH for Life's curriculum provides the main and supporting competencies students need to fully grasp each topic. Teachers provide the engaging, interactive lessons that will enable students to master the materials.
- Module I - TESOL Theory and Methodology
- Module II - The Principles of Language Teaching
- Module III - Instructional Design in the Student-Centered Classroom
- Module IV - Teaching Practicum
Each module includes assignments, a project, and lots of teaching and interaction.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention each module also offers lots of opportunities for fun!For a more complete review of the TESOL Certification Program, CLICK HERE.
