Ruth Woodall attended module II of the TESOL course in June 2007 in preparation for her year volunteering in Brazil. In addition to her work as a volunteer, Ruth taught in Rio Verde, Goias in Brazil at New Leader English Course, a private school that specializes in business English to people in the areas of agriculture, medicine, and law. Ruth knew that the TESOL course would give her the tools for teaching that she needed. Ruth also spent time in Brazil teaching basic conversational English at a private school to members of the community. This was a great opportunity to help people who wanted to learn English in order to converse with American missionaries, keep up with grandchildren who were being raised speaking English, or improve their skills for more opportunities. Once a week she also offered English help to the Brazilian teachers of the school to discuss certain areas such as pronunciation or vocabulary. Living in Brazil was a great opportunity for Ruth to better her Portuguese, but much more than that, it was an opportunity for her to make new friends, broaden her network, and enrich her life. Ruth offers a very good piece of advice for others looking to teach abroad: Don’t just teach, LEARN. Only by teaching AND learning can we begin to really communicate with one another and build bridges.
